How To Spot A Dumbbell Bench Press – A possible CSCS Exam question

I see it all the time. I just saw it in the gym today done incorrectly.

Before, I tell you the answer let me ask you the question.

How do you spot an athlete in the dumbbell bench press?

Is it the elbows or forearms near the wrist?

Are you spotting like this?

If you said elbows then you are wrong. Now when I say wrong I mean according to the NSCA.

I’m not here to debate or judge you.

The correct answer is spotting at the athlete’s forearms near the wrists.

When it comes to taking the CSCS exam you must not get confused with what you’ve been doing or what makes sense to you.

It doesn’t matter that your friend has been spotting you from the elbows for years and it feels comfortable for you.

When it comes to passing the CSCS exam you must understand what they see as the correct answer.

According to the NSCA, you must spot as close to the dumbbells as possible.

THE REASON?

If you spot from the elbows, there is a chance that the weight may come crashing down on the athlete’s face or chest.

There is risk of injury spotting from that position.

So if you see this question on the exam, don’t get it wrong!
